Public schools ordered to remove CCTVs

THE Education ministry has ordered the removal of all closed circuit video surveillance cameras (CCTV) from public schools citing violation of personal data and safety issues.

It urged all schools that have installed CTTV systems to remove them as they are not aligned with the ministry’s policies, and they pose hazards to the safety of teachers and students, according to a circular signed by the ministry’s permanent secretary Egli Pantelaki.

“These installations interfere with the schools’ infrastructure and electrical installations without being first approved by the ministry’s technical services to ensure they are up to safety standards,” the circular said.

“Since the ministry is not inclined in the near future to review its existing policy, I urge you to switch off all CCTVs and erase all personal data recorded,” Pantelaki said.

She added that the cameras may remain in place if the schools believe they could act as a deterrent.

The security measures approved by the ministry, it said, are alarms, installation of higher gates or gates to prevent access to staircases, classrooms and offices, police patrols and services of private security companies.

“Strict observance of the instructions of this circular is recommended,” it said.

It adds that schools may contact the ministry’s health and safety officers for assistance.
