Mother who left boy home alone to appear in court on Thursday

The 30-year-old Latvian woman who was remanded for one day on Sunday on suspicion of child neglect will appear before a Limassol court on April 9, according to a police report.

The woman is accused of abandoning a child under 16. She had left her 12-year-old son alone in the family home for 10 days to travel to Iran with her Iranian partner and their younger child.

The 12-year-old is from the Latvian woman’s previous marriage.

The boy was seen by neighbours wandering the area near the family home, and they contacted the police. Speaking to the authorities, the boy said that a friend of the family was coming by every day with food but said he was sleeping there alone.

He has been put under the care of welfare services.

The mother, who was arrested on Saturday at the Ledra Palace checkpoint upon her return from Iran, was also required to hand in her travel documents and ordered to report at a police station three times a week.

She and her partner had been due back in Cyprus on Friday night through Larnaca but police had issued arrest warrants so the woman came alone through the north instead.
