Cyprus must wait until 2060 to see a total eclipse

Hundreds of people on Friday donned protective glasses to view the solar eclipse, which covered the sun by around 20 per cent when viewed from Cyprus though in some parts of the world coverage was as high as 90 per cent.

In Cyprus, the phenomenon began at 11.05am, lasting almost an hour and a half. According to astrophysicst Dr Stelios Tsaggarides Cyprus will not seen a total solar eclipse until April 30, 2060.

Between now and then, two other almost total solar eclipses will be visible in Cyprus, on August 2, 2027 with 80-90 per cent coverage, and on June 1, 2030 with 90 per cent + coverage.

Tsaggarides added that the next solar eclipse visible in Cyprus will happen on  June 21, 2020 and will see a 30-40 per cent coverage of the sun.

The next total lunar eclipse will happen on September 28 this year and will be visible in Cyprus. (CNA)
