Town hall asks graffiti artist to dress his fairies

GRAFFITI artist Achilleas Michaelides was asked to cover up parts of his artwork by the municipal council, while participating in the Street Life festival events at the weekend.

The Nicosia-based artist, whose creative name is ‘Paparazzi’, painted an impressive graffiti on the wall of a house at Saripolou street in Limassol’s historic centre.

The design depicted a group of naked female fairies flying in the sky. Michaelides was asked to ‘cover up’ his work by painting clothing over the fairies’ bodies.

“A person from Town Hall came and asked me to dress up the girls in the graffiti. I didn’t want to create trouble so I did.

“I do believe that nudity is not necessarily pornographic and perhaps the person who made the request doesn’t know much about art,” said Michaelides.

Regardless, Michaelides expressed his gratitude and said the events were well-organised by the City Council, Town Planning and local sponsors, Gifts and Gadgets.

“The event was successful and I am grateful to all who participated in the organisation of the festival,” he added.

The festival was part of the Cultural Heritage Days, a series of cultural and entertainment events taking place in Limassol throughout the month.
