Brazilian jailed for import of cocaine

A 23-year-old Brazilian man was jailed for 10 years on Tuesday for the import, and possession with intent to supply of 2.8kg of cocaine.
The man was arrested at Larnaca airport on August 20 after his arrival from Sao Paolo through Abu Dhabi.
The drugs were found in two packages hidden under the plastic bottom of his hand-luggage.
The 23-year-old said he knowingly agreed to carry the drugs because he needed the money. The defendant said he was promised $2,000, payable upon his return to Brazil.
The court heard that the defendant came from a large family and that he stopped school when he was 14. Eight months before his arrest he was living with his girlfriend, 16, and their four-month-old child.
