Eight sign up for Paphos election

A record eight candidates will contest the Paphos mayoral by-election on January 11, after the position was vacated by DIKO’s Savvas Vergas who has been charged for corruption.
The contestants submitted their candidacies on Tuesday. They are Aristos Vasiliades, supported by DIKO, AKEL, and EDEK, DISY municipally councillor Phedonas Phedonos, Doros Paphitis, Andreas Masouras, Andreas Chrysanthou Vangelos Mavronicolas, Sophie Hambiaouridou, and Chrysanthos Chrysanthou.
Paphos’ returning officer Yiannakis Mallourides said the number of candidates was a first for Cyprus, not just the town.
But he did not expect any problems, he said. The ballots will be ready in a few days.
The January 11 poll will be held between 7am and 6pm with an hour’s break for lunch at 12pm.
Votes will be counted at individual polling stations and the result is expected before 8pm.
All candidates appeared certain they can bring change in the town, reeling from revelations about the involvement of their mayor and other party officials in the corruption scandal surrounding the construction of the sewerage system.
