TV shows we love: Working Mums

I advise you to watch this show after having children.

Not that a fictitious story about four working mums who struggle to balance their career, mental issues, maintain a marriage and dedicate their lives to the person they created only for them to grow into an obnoxious teenager might turn your biological clock backwards.

But when you feel like you have had enough of your family life, this diverse group of mums will make sure you know you are doing a fantastic job.

Working Mums is an amusing show for everyone. Partly due to its fabulous script writers and creator Catherine Reitman – who also stars in the show as a sexy, workaholic new mother. The female team managed to instil the conversation with just enough reality kicks and humour for a flawless emotional rollercoaster ride.

The on point acting of the leads who take on a role that is too close to home for most women out there is the show’s additional strength. The scene from the first episode where Reitman’s character cries while laughing after yelling at a bear while protecting her baby in the park still makes me feel warm inside whenever I think about it.

Mums are superheroes. They deserve a good show.

Another controversial brownie point goes for inclusivity with the series featuring women of different races and sexualities. As the show teaches us, people will criticise you no matter what you do.

So, were all the diversity cards in one basket with an interracial lesbian couple where one battles postpartum depression? Yes. But did they do it tastefully without being drawn into all the stereotypes connected with people’s sexuality? Yes. So we are still cool.

Cross your fingers as a fifth season is expected in February, pandemic allowing.
