Fire in Limassol apartment block basement extinguished

A Limassol apartment building was evacuated on Monday as a precaution after a fire broke out in the basement.

In a tweet, fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis said a fire broke out in the basement of an apartment building on John Kennedy street, in the Enaerios area around 4pm. The space was used for storage.

The service responded with five fire engines and two crews entered the basement to extinguish the fire before it spread to the apartment block or neighbouring buildings, in what Kettis described as a difficult operation because of the location of the fire.

The Cyprus News Agency said the fire caused damage to the storage facilities that were being used for documents and paper. The cost of the damage has not been estimated yet.

It said that a fire engine remains on site as a precaution.

The cause of the fire will be investigated at the first light of day.
