Coronavirus: three more deaths, record 477 new cases announced on Wednesday (Updated)

The health ministry announced three more deaths and a record 477 new Covid cases on Wednesday of which 175 were confirmations of rapid tests taken in previous days.

The three deceased people were two women and one man aged 97, 94 and 90 respectively. They all had underlying conditions, but their deaths were attributed to Covid-19.

The 97-year-old woman was a resident of the Archangelos Michael nursing home.

This brings the total number of people who died of coronavirus to 104; 66 men and 38 women with average age 80 years.

The latest cases were among 4,343 PCR tests.

In addition to the 175 confirmations of rapid tests taken in previous days, cases also include: 133 people found positive through contact tracing and 118 people who got tested privately.

Four cases were among passengers who were randomly tested at the Larnaca and Paphos airports.

Another 46 cases concern samples processed at the labs of state hospitals and one case was among those referred for testing by family physicians or tests given to special groups.

This brings the total number of cases to 18,883 so far.

As regards rapid tests, according to the health ministry, 233 positives were detected among 9,845 tests. These results will now have to confirmed through PCR.

Seventy cases were detected in the Nicosia district out of 4,392 tests, 59 in Larnaca out of 1,526 tests while in Limassol 54 positive tests emerged out of 1,564 rapid tests. Six positive rapid tests were detected in the Paphos district among 343 given, and nine in the Famagusta district out of 308 in total.

Twenty-two positive cases were also found among people who got tested privately, three in the National Guard, and 10 in nursing homes and other care homes.

The health ministry said that 146 people with Covid-19 are being treated in state hospitals, 34 in serious condition. Of these, 16 are at the Nicosia general hospital’s intensive care unit, 15 of whom intubated, the ministry said.
