Coronavirus: One death, 286 new cases (Updated)

One more person died of Covid-19 on Monday, while testing revealed 286 new cases among the population.

The latest casualty was a man aged 89 who was being treated at the Famagusta general hospital. Though suffering from underlying conditions, the final cause of death was attributed to the coronavirus.

Earlier on Monday, the health ministry announced that an extra four deaths of elderly people earlier in the month had now been attributed to Covid-19, bringing the total number virus deaths to 96.Of these 62 are men and 34 are women – with the average age of the deceased at 79 years.

In the various hospitals across the island, 127 patients were being treated for Covid-19, of whom 31 were in a serious condition.

Of the serious cases, 15 were intubated and the other 16 cared for in high-dependency units.

The Famagusta referral hospital was treating 70 patients, of whom 64 in dedicated coronavirus ward, the other six in the high-dependency unit.

At Nicosia general hospital there were 30 patients overall – of whom 15 in intensive care, nine in the coronavirus ward, and six in the high-dependency unit.

Lastly Limassol general hospital cared for 27 patients, of whom 23 in the coronavirus ward and four in the high-dependency unit.

Of the 286 latest cases of Covid-19, the health ministry said the 156 were confirmations of rapid tests that had been carried out in previous days.

This data concerned 3,929 tests with PCR.

In addition, 8,843 antigen rapid tests were carried out, generating 312 positives – these are pending confirmation via PCR.

Regarding the latest 286 confirmed cases specifically, they break down as follows: 65 came from contact tracing; eight from the airports; 40 from people getting tested on their own initiative; 17 from tests carried out at the various hospitals’ microbiology labs; and 156 from rapid tests of prior days.

Since the outbreak of the virus in March, 18,004 people have tested positive for Sars-Cov-2.

Over in the north, authorities detected 17 new positives, bringing the cumulative there to 1,417.
