The death of one woman, 61, and 198 new coronavirus cases were officially announced on Saturday by the health ministry.
In total 4,157 lab tests were carried out.
The 61-year-old woman, who was treated at the Paphos general hospital’s intensive care unit, died of Covid-19 on Friday night but her death was not officially announced until Saturday. She had an underlying health condition.
This brings the total number of deaths from Covid-19 to 39: 24 men and 15 women with an average age of 74.
Among the new cases, 14 concern people at the Ekali nursing home in Limassol: seven members of the staff and seven residents. Another case at the home, a staff member, was detected in recent days.
Another elderly woman living in a nursing home in Nicosia was among Saturday’s new cases, and that is why the health ministry will carry out tests there on Monday to all residents and staff.
One case was also detected at the Christos Stelios Ioannou Foundation also in Nicosia. Tests will also be carried out there too.
In total 84 cases were detected through contact tracing, and another 82 concern people who tested privately.
Six more cases were detected through tests processed in state hospitals’ labs, and 20 cases, that include those at the nursing homes and the foundation, were among tests given to special groups and referrals by family physicians.
One more case was detected among tests given in schools and another among football clubs.
Four cases concern people who arrived from abroad.
The total number of cases since March is now at 7,051.
As regards the Ekali nursing home, the health ministry said that a doctor and nurses were sent there to assess their clinical condition. It was earlier announced that two of the people who tested positive were sent to the reference hospital in Famagusta.
The ministry recalled that due to the increased cases detected in nursing homes lately, testing started on Saturday on all staff members of these homes in all districts.
This is the third time such a testing programme is implemented in nursing and care homes, the ministry said, adding that rapid tests will be given in the coming days in these places.
There are now 47 patients with coronavirus at the Famagusta hospital, five of whom are in the high dependency unit. Seventeen more people are at the Nicosia general hospital, eight of them in the intensive care unit.
