Cypriot group joins Greeks and Spaniards against foreclosures

Three anti-foreclosures movements from Cyprus, Greece, and Spain seek to co-operate in reversing the austerity policies imposed by international lenders, the European Commission, and banks.

The Cypriot movement against foreclosures, the Crete’s association of debtor mutual help, and the Spanish platform have signed a declaration saying that international lenders, banks, and the European Council must be tackled through the co-ordination of European people.

“The fight against foreclosures does not only concern those who are at risk of losing their homes, businesses, and land. It is part of the struggle to protect the broad strata of society from the bulimia of the few.”

The declaration said the feeling of fear and fatalism created by the continuous attacks by the European economic and political institutions against the people of Europe is giving way to a mood for reaction.

The Cypriot movement said it was ready to work with any other movements with the same target.

“Having as our standard the right to housing and work, we will fight for a different Europe. A Europe where banks and economic and social institutions in general will justify their existence by safeguarding people’s lives, not a Europe that will sacrifice people to support its institutions,” the declaration said.
