Coronavirus: 165 new cases, four more deaths (Updated)

The health ministry announced 165 new cases and four more deaths on Wednesday, bringing the total of Covid-19 related deaths in the past two days to seven.

The new cases were discovered out of 3,291 tests and raises the total number recorded since March to 6,461.

The latest data also raises Cyprus’ coronavirus death toll to 33 – those that died from the virus – including 20 men (60 per cent) and 13 women (40 per cent), with the average age being 75 years.

The ministry said a woman aged 92 with underlying health issues had died at Famagusta hospital, which is the reference hospital for coronavirus.

The other two patients died in the ICU of Nicosia hospital where they had been on the ventilator – a man aged 71 with underlying medical issues and a 62-year-old woman who did not have any underlying conditions.

Later on Wednesday, the ministry announced that an 89-year-old man, with serious underlying health conditions, had also died and the final cause of death was the coronavirus.

As for the cases and tests, 59 were identified via contact tracing after 608 tests were carried out.

A further 68 were found via 1,540 private tests.

The labs at hospitals recorded 16 cases out of 254 tests.

Five travellers tested positive out of 414 tests.

Another 15 cases were found out of 243 tests done on doctors’ orders.

Finally, two tests were identified via 148 tests done as part of the programme to check the school environment.

As of Wednesday night, there are a total of 73 patients in hospital for coronavirus, of whom 57 are being cared for at the Famagusta hospital. Six of those are in the high dependency unit.

There are currently six patients in Nicosia general hospital’s ICU wing, four of whom are on ventilators.

Another 10 patients are being treated at the coronavirus ward in Nicosia general hospital.
