Kyprianou: current situation ‘critical’

Akel general-secretary Andros Kyprianou on Sunday described the current situation in Cyprus as critical saying it was extremely important to achieve the creation of conditions that will force Turkey to return to the negotiating table.

In statements before leaving for Athens, Kyprianou said: “We need to deal with it effectively, but above all substantially, and not be limited to actions that aimed at impressing public opinion .”

President Nicos Anastasiades is due to meet on Tuesday evening with the newly-elected Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, who, along with Turkey has expressed preference for a two-state solution in Cyprus.

Kyprianou said he was off to Athens to meet the Greek leadership to find out how they plan to proceed in dealing with Turkey and “its unacceptable positions”.

“We will convey our views to the Greek prime minister, the president, the foreign minister as well as well as the leaders of the Greek communist party and Syriza,” said Kyprianou.
