Worker dies in road accident

A foreign worker was killed on Friday morning after the pick-up truck he was travelling in overturned in Psimolofou, Nicosia, police said.

Traffic police chief Haris Evripidou told the Cyprus Mail that the 6am accident took place as five individuals – all foreigners – rode a pick-up truck, that could only accommodate two passengers, to work.

The victim and two other workers were riding in the truck’s cargo area.

Evripidou said that the vehicle veered to the right of the road and overturned after hitting a wall.

The passengers in the rear of the truck were thrown onto the road, resulting in one death and one serious injury.

Evripidou said, as it is illegal to carry people in truck beds, the vehicle’s driver will be brought up on charges.

But it is yet unclear whether their employer, who provided them with the vehicle, would also face prosecution.

“That will depend on the statements we receive,” Evripidou said. “Specifically, whether he was aware that his vehicle was being used for these purposes or not.”
