Burglars steal €35,000 from home in broad daylight

Around €35,000 in cash as well as jewellery and silverware of an unknown value were stolen from a Nicosia home in broad daylight, police said on Friday.
The theft was reported by a resident of Strovolos who told the authorities his home had been burgled between 2.20pm and 5pm on Thursday.
It appears that due to the banking crisis and the capital controls currently in place, people are making a habit of keeping more money at home, turning themselves into target for burglars.

A police spokesperson said it was too early to tell if there had been a rise in the number of cases involving cash stolen from residencies, but advised the public to keep only small amounts at home.

“We recommend to people to only keep what they need at home and put the rest in the bank otherwise they risk becoming a target for thieves,” the spokesperson said.
