Remand after one arrested in connection with vandalism at Tsirio (updated)

Limassol district court remanded a 21-year-old man for five days on Tuesday, in relation to the vandalism of Tsirio stadium in Limassol by AEL fans over the weekend.

Police arrested the man, who lives in Limassol, late on Monday. He is being investigated for conspiracy to commit a crime, illegal entry, illegal possession of explosives, causing malicious damage and violating the decree against the spread of the coronavirus.

About 400 AEL fans entered the stadium illegally late on Sunday, police said, and damaged the field by throwing fireworks and lighting torches to celebrate the 90th anniversary of their team.

Police were also investigating whether the injuries of two people in the area where the team’s association is located, are related.

The injuries concerned a 17-year-old boy who was treated in a private clinic for mouth injuries, and a 25-year-old man who was attacked by an unknown person and suffered a broken nose and jaw.
