Omonia move into second place with win over AEL, Apoel stumble against Ermis

Omonia moved into second place two points behind Apollon after a hard fought 3-0 win over AEL at the GSP stadium.

Despite dominating most of the play in the first half Omonia were finding it difficult to break down AEL’s well drilled defence.

AEL began to grow in confidence after the break and just as they were pushing forward in search of a goal Omonia broke into attack with Tzionis bursting past Santos before setting up Assante for one of the easiest goals he will score in his career to give the home side the lead in the 64th minute.

AEL tried to fight back but apart from Danilo hitting the post they rarely troubled Omonia’s goal.

A minute before the end Kakoullis doubled the score for Omonia after Gomes played him through to make sure of the three points.

In the fourth minute of added time Beauteac added a third from the penalty spot, a result that is slightly flattering for the home side.

After one of their worst performances of the season so far Apoel dropped two more points as they were held to a goalless draw against Ermis Aradippou in Larnaca.
