Fire near Peristerona burns dry grass, olive trees (updated)

Α fire between the Nicosia district villages of Peristerona and Orounta burned around 17 hectares of dry grass and a number of olive trees, the fire service said on Saturday.

The flames also affected a photovoltaic park and some electricity poles. Firefighters managed to keep the flames away from farms in the area.

According to spokesman Andreas Kettis, the fire started at around lunchtime.

Four engines and two forestry department aircraft and tractors were taking part in the operation to put it out.

Kettis said firefighters would be staying in the area as a precaution.
