Low expenditure on the environment

The Statistical Service announced on Tuesday that in 2012 0.17% of Cyprus’ GDP was spent on environmental protection activities in industry, adding that in other EU countries the corresponding expenditure reached 0.39%.
On the basis of the results of a survey carried out by the Statistical Service, “the total expenditure for environmental protection activities in industry in 2012 is estimated at €29.6 million, compared to €32.2 million in 2011.”
By sector of economic activity, the manufacturing industries reported expenditures of €24.6 million, mining and quarrying industries €2.2 million and the electricity and water supply sector €2.8 million.
Expenditure related to the reduction of air emissions reached €10.2m, the treatment and disposal of waste €9.3m.
