Bases cop remanded in loan sharking case

A British bases policeman was remanded in custody for two days on Wednesday in connection with loan sharking, police said.

The man, 40, was arrested by Cyprus police after a woman, 57, who also works at the bases, borrowed €1,000 from him in January at a 20 per cent interest rate per month.

The two sides agreed that the loan would be repaid in one year. So far, the woman paid €600 in three monthly instalments of €200.

A friend of the woman, who had brought her in touch with the suspect in the first place, had provided him with post-dated cheques as guarantee.

Limassol CID chief Ioannis Soteriades said the suspect denies any involvement in the case.
