Meteor shower lights up night sky

The night sky will continue to light up on Tuesday as the Perseid meteor shower peaks.

The Perseid shower is an annual night spectacle occurring when the Earth passes through a wide stream of debris shed by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Sun once every 130 years or so and last passed through the inner solar system in 1992.

The shooting star display started on July 17 and will last until August 24.

An event takes place at Kyperounda village, in Limassol District, tonight with the use of a telescope so that all those interested can observe the spectacular phenomenon in detail.

Stargazers were in for a treat this August as on Sunday they also had the opportunity to enjoy a super moon, that is to say a full moon at its closest to earth in its orbit.
