Saturday, March 14: Coronavirus global update

About 138,170 people have been infected by the coronavirus across the world and 5,078 have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Infections have now been reported by 132 countries outside China. Trinidad and Tobago and Ghana reported their first cases, while Algeria, Azerbaijan, Greece, India, Norway and Poland had their first fatalities. The death toll in Iran, one of the hardest-hit countries outside China, crossed 500.

20.31 France reports 12 deaths today, French PM announces closure of restaurants, shops

France reported 91 coronavirus related deaths, up from 79 the previous day, Friday.

The Public Health Authority also confirmed 838 new cases reaching 4,499 on Saturday.

The French PM also announced the closure of cafes, restaurants, cinemas and shops.

20.30 Slovenia records first death

lovenia has recorded its first death due to coronavirus, national channel TV Slovenia said on Saturday, citing unofficial sources.

It said the victim was an elderly man with a chronic disease. The Ministry of Health gave no immediate comment.

Yemen’s Saudi-backed government said on Saturday it was suspending all flights to and from airports under its control for two weeks starting on March 18, amid fears over the coronavirus outbreak.

18:24 Death toll in Lombardy, Italy, rises to 966

The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in Lombardy, the Italian region that has been worst affected by the crisis, rose to 966 on Saturday, an increase of 76 from the previous day, Giulio Gallera, the region’s senior health official said.

The number of new cases rose by 1,865 to 11,685, he told a news conference.

The latest national death toll is due to be released later in the day. On Friday, the Italy-wide tally stood at 1,266.

An 82-year-old woman became New York’s first coronavirus fatality, authorities said on Saturday, after President Donald Trump declared a national emergency and the spread of the pandemic shut down much of the daily routine of American life.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the woman, who had previously suffered from emphysema, was hospitalized in Manhattan on March 3. He told reporters that the state’s tally of cases had risen to 524. Nationwide, more than 2,000 people have been infected and 48 have died.

The U.S. government is expected to announce on Saturday that it is expanding its travel ban on most European countries to include Britain and Ireland as it seeks to contain the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe, airline and U.S. officials told Reuters.

U.S. President Donald Trump originally exempted Britain and Ireland from his 30-day ban on travelers from 26 European countries that took effect at midnight on Friday. More than 800 people in Britain have tested positive for the virus and more than 20 have died from COVID-19, the disease it causes.

Jordan said it would stop all incoming and outgoing passenger flights into the country from Tuesday as it tightens border controls to combat the spread of coronavirus.

Announcing the move on Saturday, Prime Minister Omar Razzaz said universities and schools would be closed for two weeks and all tourist sites and all sports and cinemas would also be shut.

The Spanish government is to put the country under lockdown as part of its state of emergency measures meant to combat the coronavirus, several media including El Mundo and Cadena Ser reported on Saturday.

The government will say all Spaniards must stay home except to buy food or drugs, go to the hospital, go to work or other emergencies, El Mundo reported.

The paper reports Spain’s Interior Ministry will control all police forces, including local and regional ones, as part of the state of emergency.

13:18 Greece reports two more fatalities

Greece said on Saturday it would suspend all flights that were still operating to and from Italy, after reporting two more fatalities from a coronavirus infection, raising the total number of deaths in the country to three.

The deceased were two men, aged 67 and 90, both with serious underlying health problems, the Health Ministry said. There were 190 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Greece by late Friday.

Greece has shut schools, bars, cafes and shopping malls and has already suspended all flights to and from northern Italy until March 23 to combat the spread of coronavirus.
