Christos Zannetou new Ayia Napa mayor

Christos Zannetou was elected Ayia Napa mayor on Sunday with 59 per cent of the votes in his favour.

Zannetou, who served as deputy mayor, received 1,508 votes and was up against municipal councillor Emilia Evangelou Xydia who had 1,059 votes in her favour, 41 per cent.

A total of 78 per cent of people went to cast their vote. In Ayia Napa, there were 3,334 voters who were eligible to vote, of which 2,687 where Cypriot citizens and 647 were EU citizens.

Eight ballots were left blank, 26 were void and 2,567 were valid.

Four polling stations were open to the public between 7am to 6pm with a one hour break at 12pm.

The elections took place after the previous Ayia Napa mayor Yiannis Karousos was appointed to the post of transport minister in December’s cabinet reshuffle.
