Large fire burns same area of Corfu in Greece

A large fire that broke out in Corfu on Tuesday afternoon was extinguished later in the day, the fire service said in statements to the Athens-Macedonia news agency.

The fire managed to reach the gardens of some homes in Neochori and Palaiochori on the island, the fire service said, adding that the towns were immediately evacuated, while a number of wooden temporary homes built by Roma were burnt by the fire.

The fire chief of the Ionian islands’ region Andreas Rizos said: “At this time, the fire has been extinguished and is under control, and houses are not in danger.”

The fire service is examining the damages, where four days ago another blaze burned 80 acres of grassland.

Fire fighters are on guard in the area.
