God is perfect and makes no mistakes and the Church should know better, American actress and TV presenter Whoopi Goldberg has said in response to a Church of Cyprus statement describing homosexuality as “an affliction and a moral downfall.”

“You have every right to be here like everybody else. And the church should know better,” Goldberg said in a message to the island’s LGBTI community. “Cause if you are looking at God’s way, God never turns his back on you. God loves each and every one of you because God doesn’t make mistakes. You see? That’s how that works,” the actress said in a 50 second video posted on YouTube.

Goldberg was asked to comment on the subject by US-based filmmaker Harry Mavromichalis, who was interviewing her for a documentary on the life of Olympia Doukakis.

“God is perfect and you walk in his divinity. So don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t cause it’s not true”, added Goldberg, asking the LGBTI community to march on and have their pride.

“And keep your head up y’all. It would get better”.

Last week, in response to the first Gay Pride parade scheduled for the end of this month, the Church said homosexuality was “an affliction and a moral downfall” that should be treated.

“The church is opposed to all attempts for homosexuality to be socially accepted and protected by law,” the Holy Synod said. “Men and women, misled by foreign groups or confused by their own conscience are protesting and claiming that homosexuality is normal and that it should be socially accepted and legally protected. To that end they are also planning a so called ‘pride parade.”
