Animal Party call to not fatten animals at home for Easter

Following the recent sighting of a baby goat on an apartment balcony in Ayios Dometios, the Animal Party urged the public on Tuesday to refrain from making their gardens, balconies and roofs into open-air butcher shops in view of the approaching Easter holidays.

In a call to lawmakers and to the public who it said are responsible for following the law, the Animal Party said it would not tolerate the public slaughtering of animals such as pigs, goats, chickens and rabbits, which are often kept in gardens-turned-farms as Easter approaches.

The party also condemned the practice by various municipalities and communities, whereby during Easter lotteries livestock are included as awards or gifts.

“What exactly do the winners do with these animals?” the Animal Party asked. “Do they slaughter them publicly? Do they keep them as pets? Do they abandon them in fields as we have seen in other cases?”
The party also called on all citizens sensitised to animal rights to report such practices, which it said are illegal and a threat to public health and safety.
