Man remanded after stealing military rifle (updated)

A 24-year-old man was remanded in police custody for three days by Paphos District court on Sunday after his arrest for stealing a military G-3 rifle.

According to police on Sunday, following his arrest the man, already known to the force for burglaries and drug offences, admitted to the theft and said he would return the rifle and some bullets to its rightful owner.

He was arrested on Saturday night after a warrant was issued although the gun has yet to be found.

A 35-year-old man reported to police that between 6.45am and 6.40pm on Friday, someone had broken into his house in the Paphos district and stolen the gun, five magazine and 200 bullets in addition to jewellery worth around €170.

The police believe the suspect also broke into a shop selling car parts on the same day in the same area. Parts that had been stolen were later returned to the shop’s owner by the 24-year-old’s family.
