Storytelling through puppets

Chilean puppeteer Roberto Braham and Cypriot storyteller Marina Katsariare coming together for a unique performance next Saturday.

Hosted at the cosy Prozak café-bar in Nicosia, the two artists will put on a powerful storytelling puppetry performance.

Braham is from Canicula Puppets, a puppet theatre company from his home country now based in Europe that promotes social change through art. The Chess Pieces of the King isn’t his first performance in Cyprus, as Canicula Puppets performed the Amikeco puppet show earlier in February with one final performance on February 24 at Aeriko.

The new performance is based on the folk tale The Crutches as included in Lily Labrelli’s collection Ten Plus One Wise Tales for Times of Crisis and Other Difficulties, and is suitable for teenagers and adults.
The Chess Pieces of the King tells the tale of a king of an imaginary country, who because of an accident, is obliged to walk with crutches. He orders everyone in his kingdom to walk with crutches and as the years pass people start to forget how it felt to walk. But memories survive somewhere and prepare to overthrow the new state of things.
