FM to take part in EU-Arab League Summit in Brussels

Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides leaves for Brussels on Sunday where he will take part in the EU-Arab League Summit on Monday.

According to a foreign ministry announcement, during the Summit foreign ministers will discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the EU and the Arab League and will exchange views on international and regional developments including ways to promote peace, security and economic development in the broader region.

Later, the ministers will attend a working lunch, to discuss ‘Multilateralism and regional cooperation: A response to the challenges the region is facing in the area of security.’

On the sidelines, Christodoulides is set to meet his counterparts from the Arab world.

The meeting is deemed as important “since relations and the cooperation with countries from the broader region comprise a basic pillar of the foreign policy of the Republic of Cyprus,” the ministry announcement said.

It also pointed to the prospects for highlighting the role of Cyprus as the EU member state located closest to the Arab countries, while noting the network of bilateral and trilateral cooperation schemes Cyprus has developed with Arab countries in the region.
