Motorists warned of fog and mudslides

Police warned motorists on Monday evening of rock and mudslides on mountainous roads in the Limassol district and of dense fog in the Paphos and Troodos areas.

The road between Gerasa and Kalo Chorio, pilode said, is closed in both directions due to rock and mudslides.

Rock and mudslides have also occurred on the Zoopigi to Agros road, where heavy rainfall and dense fog prevail resulting in limited visibility.

Police warned of restricted visibility due to fog also on the Paphos to Polis Chrysochous, Peyia to Polis Chrysochous and Agia Varvara to Panayia roads.

The road to the bridge of the Tzielefos river, from Ayios Nicolaos to Pera Vasa remains closed to traffic, police said.

Some roads that that lead to Troodos are open only to vehicles with four-wheel drive or snow chains. This concerns the Karvounas to Troodos, Platres to Troodos and Prodromos to Troodos roads. In these areas, police said, there is heavy rain and dense fog, resulting in limited visibility for the passing drivers.

There are also strong winds in the areas of Zygi, Kofinou and Kiti, but no problems have been reported concerning the road network.

On Monday afternoon there were power outages mainly in Limassol and Paphos, caused by damage to the grid due to intense weather conditions.  In Trachoni, in the Limassol district, strong winds cut a tree that fell on electricity cables.

Police said no serious problems have been reported concerning the road network in the urban areas but, due to heavy rainfall in various areas across the island, motorists are urged to drive safely, at a low speed, keep a safe distance from the vehicles ahead of them and comply with the road traffic code and traffic signs to avoid road accidents.
