A Minute with… Karen Pointon Episkopi Brownie and Guide leader

Where do you live?
In Pissouri with my husband

Best childhood memory?
Going away when I was 10 to my first Guide camp – it was so exciting to be away from home and cooking on an open fire

Most frequented restaurant and absolute favourite dish?
Saffron Contemporary Indian Restaurant, Pissouri for the Chicken Kadhai

What did you have for breakfast?
Porridge

Would you class yourself as a day or night person?
Definitely a day person. That’s just as well as most Guiding events take place in daylight hours, except at camp when, under canvas, the Brownies are almost impossible to quieten down to get some sleep. Leaders need to be night owls for those occasions!

What is your favourite night out?
Meal with friends

Best book ever read?
No best one but I like the Inspector Morse books or other detective stories

Favourite film of all time?
Four Weddings and a Funeral – I like the humour, the underlying stories throughout and it features some of my favourite actors/actresses

Favourite holiday destination?
New York: it’s vibrant, busy, noisy, exciting and the shopping is great

What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
Ellie Goulding

What is always in your fridge?
Beer. But you can’t be a Brownie/Guide Leader without also having lots of great ideas to teach the girls how to cook; it’s a given that any report about units camping always includes: “We made camp fudge/camp stew/camp doughnuts” so some of that stuff too

Dream house: rural retreat or urban dwelling? Where would it be, what would it be like?
I’d like to live in the country but not too far from civilisation. A house big enough to have friends and family stay over and a large garden to grow vegetables in and to relax.

If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
Most probably Baden Powell to find out what he thinks of Girl Guiding these days and to see how surprised he might be that we are still going strong after 100 years.

If the world is ending in 24 hours what would you do?
Sit on a pretty beach in a warm place with all my family and friends for the best BBQ ever (well last one anyway). With beer!

What is your greatest fear?
Spiders

Tell me a joke
Not really a joke but at a camp with some Guides who were about 12 (with lots of attitude) who were absolutely astounded that I did not get paid for all my work with Guiding – one girl commented “You wouldn’t be that stupid to do all this for nothing Karen”! What could I say? I do!

The Brownie movement was started 100 years ago by Lord Baden Powell and his wife. Brownies worldwide are celebrating their centenary birthday in a variety of ways this month. BGiCYP Brownies are meeting this weekend for an imaginative event, based on a Star Quest theme. BGiCYP units and FOG are always looking for volunteers to help contribute to the Guiding experience for our youngsters; for more information visit www.BGIFC.org.uk (Guiding) or contact [email protected] (FOG).
