Helping the needy in Larnaca

OVER 40 well-known Greek and Cypriot singers joined forces last night to hold a charity concert for the needy in Larnaca.

The concert took place at Phinikoudes beach, attracting artists from Cyprus and Greece, including the likes of Anna Vissi, Michalis Hadjiyiannis, Evridiki, George Theophanous, Eleni Tsaligopoulou and Dionysis Savvopoulos.

Instead of an entry ticket, people were asked to bring food and other necessities which were deposited at special drop-off points.

The organisers, Larnaca Municipality and the Kiti Bishopric, along with other local communities, aim to pass on all donated items to the Larnaca community market and other volunteer organisations so they can be given out to the needy. Around 600 volunteers took part in organising the event.

Telecoms company Cytanet provided live streaming of the event for those who wished to follow it live online.

Meanwhile, the first container filled with food and supplies donated by Cypriots living in the UK arrived at Limassol port yesterday.

The container was sent by the Cyprus Love Campaign UK in response to the growing number of needy families on the island as the country’s economy continues to tank.

Around a tonne of food and supplies will be distributed equally among the four main community markets set up to help the needy. A second container is also expected to be sent from the UK shortly.
