New documentary on Kyrenia’s famous Dome hotel

A documentary on the first European style hotel to open in Cyprus, Kyrenia’s Dome Hotel, is being screened on Thursday at the Centre of Visual Arts and Research in Nicosia (CVAR).

‘The Sad But Proud Story of the Dome Hotel’, a documentary by Turkish Cypriot journalist, Simge Çerkezoğlu, will be screened on the roof terrace of CVAR’s Balthazar café.

It tells the story of Dome hotel which was built by Costas Katsellis and began operating in 1934. The hotel had attracted the British elite during British rule of the island, but also many tourists and visitors from Nicosia. During the 1974 invasion, it hosted many Britons and Cypriots who had sought refuge there.

Today, it is being jointly managed by its employees and the hotel employees’ union in the north, who want to preserve its traditional hospitality and who have averted attempts for its sale to big corporations.
The documentary is in English with Greek subtitles. Free entrance. The screening begins at 8.30pm.
