Going back to medieval Nicosia

All history lovers and those who are enchanted by the medieval should jump at the chance to join the special guided tours of the new temporary exhibition under the title Nicosia: The Birth and Growth of a Capital. Byzantine – Medieval Period at the Leventis Municipal Museum.

The free tours in Greek, which will take place on Tuesday at 5.30pm and next Saturday at 11am, will be given by the museum’s director.

This exploration through time will begin at the museum’s entrance and will continue to the first floor and end on the second floor.

The exam presents the history of Nicosia as the capital of Cyprus since the tenth century, when, according to historical information, it was named the administrative centre of Byzantine Cyprus and continues with the establishment of Nicosia as the capital during the period of the House of Lusignan, which ended in 1489.

After this rule, Cyprus became part of the trade state of Venice and Nicosia became the centre of the Venetian administration from 1489 until 1570. The exhibition’s journey through time continues until 1570 when Nicosia was ruled by Ottoman Turks.

This journey is taken with the help of a number of exquisite exhibits such as the Music Code of Cyprus, which returns to the island after an absence of six centuries, stone Gothic art, ceramics, rare coins, manuscripts and religious icons.

A number of these items were given to the Leventis Municipal Museum for display within the exhibition from state institutions, museums, cultural institutions and private collections.
