Police HQ on guard over possible attack – reports

The police headquarters was on guard early on Sunday, following a tip-off related to a possible attack against officers and premises of the force, reports said.

Daily Politis reported that police top brass went to headquarters early on Sunday to coordinate operations following the tip-off of a possible attack  by the underworld against officers but also premises of the police force.

It has not been verified whether there was actual intent on the part of the underworld to attack or whether it was a bluff aiming at mobilising the force, Politis said.

The report follows daily coordinated operations by the police in all districts which led to a number of arrests for various offences, as part of the force’s declared war on serious and organised crime.

The operations were launched after two officers were shot – one  was critically injured – some two weeks ago in Limassol after responding to a call about a parked hire car, in which three persons were behaving suspiciously.

Following the incident, police and the government, pledged to not let it go unanswered and that they would clamp down on organised crime.
