Bar review: Wagon Bar, Limassol

By Eleni Messiou

What I like most about Wagon Bar is its overall ambience, the relaxed and chilled atmosphere, in a nostalgic setting that really does allow you to travel back in time. Nostalgics, romantics, travellers, hipsters, artists and anyone else who wants to ‘hang out’ with an alternative and fun crowd will feel particularly in place here.

Try to imagine the atmosphere of a 1920s Speakeasy, replace the crowd with a more modern bunch and combine it with an artsy Western(ish) decoration and you will emulate the Spaghetti Western atmosphere that this little bar has created. The subtle, warm lighting, smoky atmosphere and the fact that Wagon shares a wall with what used to be Barfly bar, all create a very underground feeling; quite reminiscent of the celebrated atmosphere of one of the most legendary bar areas in town.

Wagon’s barwoman has a big, welcoming smile and is only too happy to prepare your drink of choice in a flash. Music twists and turns between eclectic electronic, chilled reggae and Afro funk style sounds, with special DJ nights featured from time to time. If you come with a relaxed attitude and do not mind the smoky atmosphere, you will have the blissful feeling of having stepped into a vortex, which for a few hours will transfer you somewhere funky and fun. This is definitely a place to leave your dancing inhibitions behind and free your body to the beats of the night!

Enter Wagon bar without any major expectations of seeing and be seen, just enjoy the atmosphere and shake a leg once you’ve warmed up over a few drinks! After all, any place whose DJ responds to “do you have any Fela Kuti songs” with “yes…a LOT… which one do you want?” definitely gets a full thumbs up and major respect from my side!
