Fishermen rescued during Royal Navy and Cyprus joint exercise

Royal Navy and Cypriot forces took part in a bilateral training exercise earlier this week as a final Search and Rescue exercise before the crew of the Royal Navy’s Frigate HMS Momouth headed home.

The training centred rescuing four fishermen after their boat sunk. It was the first time the Royal Navy, the Cyprus Police and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre had acted together.

This exercise marked the end of an eight-month mission for HMS Monmouth, which operated in the Middle East region to prevent illegal activity on the high seas.

According to commander Ian Fraser RN, the exercise was an excellent way to end the tour.

“The exercise was a great opportunity to work with Cypriot forces to hone our collective ability to conduct Search and Rescue operations. As mariners we must ensure that people of all nations can work closely together to ensure the safety on the high seas,” he said.
