A group of stage professionals from London’s West End are all set to present the smash-hit musical Mamma Mia! based on the songs of ABBA in Limassol, the first time it will be put on in Cyprus.
There is already massive hype around the musical coming over and posts about it on social media are spreading like wildfire with the production set to brighten Christmas for those who receive tickets under the tree.
This international smash hit is an officially licensed new production from London that will include a live orchestra on stage. It all started with a hit song – like many other things in life do – and it then took on a life of its own as a musical and then a blockbuster movie, to worldwide phenomenon. And for us it really couldn’t come at a better time as the musical will be staged from December 29 until January 5 at the Pattichio Municipal Theatre in Limassol.
Featuring almost 30 of Abba’s greatest songs – including Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Thank You for The Music, Money Money Money and many more – this much-loved musical has been seen by more than 60 million people around the world. Now Cyprus will also be on the Mamma Mia! map.
With music by Abba’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! has played for 19 years in London’s West End. It opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre on April 6, 1999, before transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004. The musical re-opened at the Novello Theatre in 2012, where it celebrated its London 18th birthday on April 6, 2017.
The show has also delighted audiences on Broadway and in more than 50 countries in six continents. It has received many awards including London Evening Standard and Olivier Awards and Tony and Drama Desk Awards in New York.
The musical, which was also transformed into a movie in 2008 with Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and Julie Walters, is set very close to home in Greece. It weaves the ABBA songs together to tell a story of love, friendship and knowing where you come from in a fun-loving way.
It all starts with Sophie’s quest to find her father. She invites three men from her mother’s romantic past to Greece for her wedding. Her mother then comes face-to-face with all three men and her past, and thankfully her friends are there to help things move musically along.
