Drunk driver five times over limit

A motorist who was nearly five times over the alcohol limit was caught by police during a routine check late on Thursday in Paralimni, it was announced on Friday.

The 38-year-old driver was stopped at 11.30pm on Protaras avenue and a breathalyser test indicated 105 μg instead of the 22 μg permitted by law.

When he was informed of the test result the man started shouting and attacking a police officer and was arrested.

Apart from daily inspections, police routinely embark on campaigns to prevent people from drinking and driving.

The latest campaign was on August 21 to 27, and according to the police the results were not encouraging. Of the 1929 drivers tested, 159 were over the limit.

Between August 7 and 13 police booked 270 drivers for drunk driving after conducting 2,878 breathalyser tests.
