The stage will be struck by the moon

Role-playing and narration will be the devises that five actors will take on in Nicosia and Limassol to bring us the play Moonstruck.

Moonstruck was written by Greek Cypriot folk poet Pavlos Liasides in the 1960s. Liasides wrote mainly in the Cypriot dialect and this play was written in political verse – also known as Decapentasyllabic verse – which is an iambic verse of 15 syllables and has the main metre of traditional popular and folk poetry.

The play, which is an Athens Festival and House of Cyprus co-production, will be performed in its original language, so that it may remain true to the time at which the play was written. It will also include poems by Liasides.

Directed by Nikos Chatzopoulos, Moonstruck is true to its title and reveals a tension between the natural and the supernatural. Balancing between the two will be five actors who will also help explore the play’s connection to ancient Greek drama.

Poetry, culture, tradition, language, drama and a story that reaches the realms of the supernatural at times will all be revealed next weekend.
