Re-defining lullabies

If you grew up in an English-speaking household you were probably sung to sleep with Hush a Bye Baby, whereas if you were a child from a Cypriot household you were surely soothed at bedtime by the song that asked Ayia Marina (the saint for children) to provide you with a pleasant sleep. Every culture has its own lullabies, but not all cultures have modern bands that specialise in re-defining them.

With a focus on lullabies from Cyprus, Greece and Asia Minor, the band Trio Nero will perform at Ibrahim’s Khan in Paphos on August 25 as part of the European Capital of Culture – Pafos2017 events.

By blending traditional elements with those of contemporary classical music, funk, rock, jazz, as well as samples of recorded lullabies, the trio from Nicosia will certainly not be putting us to sleep.

Traditional lullabies performed in an alternative manner are not the only thing on the menu for late August, however: the musicians – who are Christos Agathocleous (electric bass and pedal), Nektarios Rodosthenous (vocals and electric guitar) and George Savva (percussion and sampling / tape operator) – will also present an original song written by composer George Rodosthenous and poet Aphroditi Zacharia-Rodosthenous.
