Let the sarod play

The ARTos Foundation, in association with the High Commission of India and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations is behind a sarod concert – a stringed instrument that originates from India – that will be performed on Monday.

The concert will feature the youngest award winning Indian sarod artist, Abhisek Lahiri and his group – Soumen Nandy and Sayam Panja.

Lahiri is the son of Pandit Alok Lahiri and comes from a well-known musical family. He is trained in Hindustani classical music on Sarod of the three major gharanas of Sarod which are Shahajahanpur, Maihar gharana and Senia Bangash by father.

The Sarod player started performing in public at the age of 11. In 1977, he gave his debut performance in Holland at the World Kinder Festival where he was named as a Wonder Kid. Ever since he has performed in extensive concerts through Europe, USA, Canada, Sri Lanka, Japan and Bangladesh apart from India.

Lahiri and his father were the first Indians to perform at the European Parliament in France, Cannes World Music Festival and also at the Canada Culture Days in Toronto. His music albums entitled Sparkling Sarod and Mood Of Puriya Kalyan were nominated at GIMA (Global Indian Music Awards) in 2010 and in 2014 respectively.

Lahiri will perform Indian Classical Ragas in a traditional format of Alap, Jod and Jhala followed by compositions set to different Talas together with the support of Tabla and Tanpura.
