Swordfish found to have high mercury levels

The state health services recalled a batch of frozen swordfish steaks on Tuesday after higher than the permitted levels of mercury were detected in the product.

According to an announcement, a batch of the frozen swordfish steaks – xifias gladius – sold under the ‘Foodsaver’ brand contain more than the permitted levels of mercury.

The recalled batch was frozen on September 24, 2015 and was packed on February 23, 2017. Its best before date is October 1, 2017. The country of origin is Taiwan and the batch number is 1217.

The health services have already given instructions to the producer to withdraw the batch in question from the market immediately. Since some of it may already have been purchased, it said, consumers are urged to avoid eating the product in question and returning it to the point of purchase.
