Clerides still critical, recovery not expected

Former president Glafkos Clerides, in critical condition at a private clinic, is not expected to recover, his doctor said on Friday.

Clerides, 94, was admitted to the Evangelistria private clinic on Wednesday morning.
His doctor, Iosif Kassios, said Clerides was unaware of his surroundings.

However, “the president is calm in bed with a serene appearance, and this is something that satisfies us.”

Kassios said he and Clerides had gone through a lot throughout the years and they had taken many difficult decisions.

“We always succeeded, thank God, but at this point I do not think we will make it,” Kassios told reporters.

Friends, relatives and ordinary people have flocked to his side once news broke early on Thursday afternoon that Clerides was in critical condition.
