Police look into case of match fixing

Police are investigating a match fixing case following a report filed by football authorities concerning a first division game, it emerged on Saturday.
The island’s football association (CFA) told police that a specific first division fixture had displayed a high level of betting activity.
Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said statements have been taken from certain individuals, whom he did not name, and investigators will also look into their financials.
Authorities did not disclose the details of the investigation though reports said it concerned a referee and a goalkeeper.
The game was held early in the season, reports said, and high number of goals had been scored.
Angelides said investigators will carry out the probe as quickly as possible and refer the case to the attorney-general for further action.
The CFA got the information regarding the suspicious betting activity from UEFA, the European football governing body.
There have been several similar cases in recent years but so far no one has been prosecuted.
