A tribute to a pioneering artist

The Leventis Art Gallery continues to pay tribute to one of the pioneering artists of the first generation of Modern Cypriot Art in the exhibition Solomos Frangoulidis: The Artist – The Art Critic until September 4 in the Claude Monet Hall.

The exhibition showcases a number of Frangoulidis’ art reviews, which he wrote for local newspapers, along with a number of his artistic works. In this way the gallery wishes to present the art scene as a whole during the 30s.

Frangoulidis was born in Pano Zodia in 1902 and studied at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Athens from 1924 to 1930. He returned to Cyprus for two years and in 1934 went back to Athens, where he worked as a designer. From 1947 until his death in 1981, the artist returned to his homeland and worked on a Byzantine-Italian type of icon-painting, and painted portable icons for various churches on the island.

He had a number of solo exhibitions in Greece, Cyprus and Britain. He also participated in many group exhibitions, including one for the Commonwealth Institute under the name Exhibition of Cypriot Art in 1970.
