Almost 3,000 speeding offences recorded during police campaign

Police Wednesday announced the results of an island-wide week-long crackdown on speeding.

They said they recorded a total of 2,763 speeding offences with 506 offences reported by Nicosia police, 282 in Limassol, 385 in Larnaca, 326 in Paphos, 408 in Famagusta district and 45 in Morphou, with an additional 811 by headquarters’ traffic officers.

“As part of the police efforts to prevent and reduce traffic accidents and promote road safety awareness, a speed control campaign was held between 14-20 November 2016,” police said.

“The main objectives of the campaign were to effectively address and combat the phenomenon of committing traffic offenses, since according to statistics, speeding is one of the main causes of serious and fatal road traffic collisions.”
