Community stadium wall collapses in Paphos, no injuries

PART of the wall of the Yiolou Community Stadium in the Paphos district collapsed on Wednesday following a sudden downpour in the area which also caused damage to the road network.

Yiolou council secretary Sylvia Antoniou told the Cyprus News Agency that the heavy rainfall experienced in the late afternoon caused a large part of the local stadium’s wall near the stands to collapse.

The central water supply pipe was also broken, causing the roads to fill with dirt, debris and cut trees, particularly on the main road going from Yiolou to Polis Chrysochous, she said.

Yiolou council head Stavros Vrachnou said the stadium was built in 1987 and used by two teams for rural football league matches.

Polis Chrysochous mayor Angelos Odysseos said the rain caused minor damage to the Latchi harbour without water entering the shops in the area.
