Most Europeans think austerity has failed

MORE than half of Europeans believe that austerity policies in place since the start of the economic crisis have failed, according to a Gallup poll, conducted for the platform “Debating Europe”.

According to the poll, conducted between September 13-23,  presented  yesterday in Brussels, 51 per cent of Europeans think austerity does not work, while 34 per cent said more time was required. Only 5.0 per cent thought the policy was successful.

The sense that austerity failed was particularly high in the Southern Europe, with Greek naysayers at 80 per cent. In  Portugal the figure was 68 per cent and in Cyprus 64 per cent.

Moreover, 60 per cent of Europeans believe that there are alternative solutions while 67 per cent think austerity is beneficial for some member states. Only 22 per cent thought it was beneficial to the whole of Europe.
